The winner takes the prize: water. Performed in Santa Barbara beach (La Linea, Spain)

Two situations of social conflict, extreme from today's perspective, induced by human need of accessing to basic natural resources such as drinking water in a context of scarcity caused by climate change.

The conflict arises between individuals but also between communities of different scale: families, tribes, cities, regions, countries, etc.

In duel, the winner takes the prize: a bottle of drinking water. Natural balance alteration is reflected on the surface of the sea, abundance of salt water unfit for human consumption in contrast to the shortage of drinking water. During the wild, cruel and violent duel contenders do not use lightsabers or future technology devices but simple suits (clubs) with which, buried up to their knees, they beat each other, with no possibility of escape, until one of them ends up crushed and defeated. The woman is about to fall beaten by the greater physical, rather than intellectual, strength of the man. The choice of this old system to settle the dispute occurs because climate change causes regressive effects, recession and brutalisation, on humanity.

In stickup, a man aims at woman's head to steal her body water when flowing through the protruding tap on her chest. Despair has gripped him. There is no water but that which sourced from the female body. Both consume what he intends to get violently. It's an action that as well as including a risk to health and especially for woman's physical integrity and life it's a violent exercise of dominion over her body, accentuation of tribal and sexist traits when attempting to take ownership of a scarce resource which belongs to the woman, her own body water. Climate change harmful effects include testing the rules that define and regulate private property, a right rooted in most societies today.

As usually occurs in all conflicts, when generated by climate change, women and children are once again the most vulnerable, the first victims. Women are particularly vulnerable in an aggressive environment where survival is achieved in terms of physical strength, in the absence of structures based on current democracys characteristic principles and the rule of law.

There is no light. No contrasts in the landscape. Natural balance has been broken. While thinking on her own answer, Earth mutters.

Cambio Climático y Seguridad

Dos situaciones de conflicto social, extremas desde una perspectiva actual, inducidas por la necesidad humana de acceder a recursos naturales básicos como el agua potable en un contexto de escasez provocada por el cambio climático.

El conflicto surge entre individuos pero también entre comunidades de diferente escala: familias, tribus, ciudades, regiones, países, etc.

En el duelo, el vencedor obtiene como premio una botella de agua potable. La alteración de los equilibrios naturales se refleja sobre la superficie del mar: abundancia de agua salada no apta para el consumo humano en contraste con la escasez de agua potable. En el duelo salvaje, cruel y violento, los contendientes no utilizan espadas láser ni artefactos de tecnología futura sino simples palos (garrotes) con los que enterrados hasta las rodillas se obligan a darse garrotazos, sin posibilidad de escape, hasta que uno de los dos acaba machacado y vencido. La mujer está a punto de caer derrotada por la mayor contundencia física, que no intelectual, del hombre. La elección de este sistema antiguo para dirimir la disputa ocurre porque el cambio climático produce efectos regresivos, de retroceso y embrutecimiento, sobre la humanidad.

En el atraco a mano armada, el hombre apunta con una pistola hacia la cabeza de la mujer para robarle el agua del cuerpo a través del grifo que sobresale en su pecho. La desesperación se ha apoderado de él. Sólo queda para beber el agua que mana del cuerpo femenino. Ambos consumen lo que él pretende obtener violentamente. Es una acción que además de comportar un riesgo para la salud y sobre todo para la integridad física y la vida de la mujer constituye un ejercicio violento de dominio sobre el cuerpo de ella, la acentuación de los rasgos tribales y sexistas en el intento por hacerse con la propiedad de un bien escaso que pertenece a la mujer, el agua de su propio cuerpo. Los efectos nocivos del cambio climático incluyen poner a prueba las reglas que definen y regulan la propiedad privada, un derecho muy arraigado en la mayor parte de las sociedades actuales.

Como ocurre en todos los conflictos, en el generado por el cambio climático, las mujeres y los niños vuelven a ser los más vulnerables, las primeras víctimas. Las mujeres son especialmente vulnerables en un entorno agresivo en el que la supervivencia se consigue en función de la fortaleza física en ausencia de estructuras basadas sobre principios característicos de las democracias actuales y del estado de derecho.

No hay luz. No hay contrastes en el paisaje. El equilibrio natural se ha roto. La Tierra murmura mientras se piensa la respuesta.
